California American Water reports the Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park supply at 84 to 165 mg/L total hardness — roughly 5 to 10 grains per gallon — with pH averaging 8.4. A pool wants pH between 7.2 and 7.8. So every time you top off after evaporation, you’re adding water that pushes pH up and brings more calcium in with it. Add a long hot season, high UV burning off chlorine faster than it does inland, and summer evaporation that concentrates whatever is left behind, and you get the two problems we see most in the Conejo Valley: pH climbing until the chlorine stops doing its job, and calcium scale forming along the waterline on tile and plaster. Neither is dramatic, and neither costs much to stay ahead of. Both get expensive if nobody is watching. Weekly testing with small, regular acid additions keeps pH where it should be, and tracking calcium hardness over time tells you when a pool is heading toward a drain and refill — rather than being surprised by it.
